Irwin Mannis fully embraced being the center of attention at Baker Senior Center Naples' weekly members luncheon April 16. It was one day after the World War II veteran turned 100 years old. He was surrounded by his daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and he was presented with a proclamation honoring him by Collier County Commissioner Rick LoCastro on behalf of the commission. Mannis even waved his arms as the crowd sang him happy birthday. On turning 100, he didn’t mince words.

Ave Maria's growth means health care services are neededNCH is partnering with Barron Collier Companies to open an immediate care clinic in Ave Maria. The clinic will offer care for non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries, with rotating specialist visits. A future freestanding 24-hour emergency room is also planned for the community. Residents of the growing community of Ave Maria will have another option for medical care in the near future.

NCH is building a new $265 million heart center in Naples, Florida. The five-story, 189,000-square-foot center will consolidate heart and stroke care in one location. The project will take approximately two and a half years to complete. The project involved extensive design review and community input. NCH officials marked an end to one era and welcomed the start of a new one Wednesday.

Lee Health and NCH, the two largest hospital systems in Lee and Collier counties, will welcome new resident physicians in July. The incoming residents will help address the ongoing physician shortage in Southwest Florida, which is exacerbated by rapid population growth. The arrival of the new residents coincides with "Match Day," an annual event where medical school graduates nationwide find out where they will complete their residency training.
