Monthly rents for students have risen by an average of €100 over the past five years, according to newly published analysis by Kotkompas – a tool developed to comment on the student housing market. According to the research, the average student rent in shared accommodation in Belgium is €575 including charges. For a studio, the price rises to €780 per month on average. Unsurprisingly, the most expensive town to stay away from home in Belgium is the capital, where rents average €680 per month.

The increasing difficulty of finding a human to talk to, instead of being directed to an online form or chatbot if you have a problem with your bank, tax office or housing association, is becoming more problematic, according to a new report by regional mediation institution, Ombuds Bruxelles. Forced to go it alone on digital platforms when talking on the telephone is not an option, citizens are confronted with complex instructions rarely formulated in accessible language, the ombudsman found.

Three police officers from the Brussels-Midi police zone have gone on trial for collusion with the criminal underworld following a shooting incident that claimed a young life. The prosecution is asking for prison sentences between 15 and 20 months for the men. However, the police officers continue to maintain their innocence, and their lawyers will defend them at the next hearing. The events date back to July 2020. A young man, Soufiane Benali, was shot dead in a drug-related shootout.

The president of Belgium's funeral sector federation has called for “clear and uniform regulations” after reports of rogue funeral directors taking dead bodies "hostage" to get a better chance of directing their funerals. On 21 January, Teresa Sdralevich found her ex-partner had died after a fall. As the police could not reach the relatives, they asked the funeral director they worked with to take the body to the municipal morgue. After that, Sdralevich could choose a funeral director.
