“You’re riding high in April, shot down in May” is a famous line from Frank Sinatra’s 1966 hit, “That’s Life.” The Mets, who enjoyed a charmed first month of the 2025 baseball season, hope the second part of that lyric does not come to fruition. Nonetheless, there are reasons for worry, particularly when it pertains to the team’s bullpen. Injuries are always a part of sports, and the pitching gods have not been kind to the Mets so far in 2025.

When Brett Baty was selected by the Mets in the first round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft, the hopes were he would follow in the footsteps of the greatest third baseman in their history, David Wright. He certainly started his Mets career on an auspicious note when he hit a home run in his first at-bat in the majors. It occurred on August 17, 2022, against the Atlanta Braves. Baty became just the fifth Mets player to do that.

Last Monday, Juan Soto told New York Post Mets beat writer Mike Puma that he is seeing different pitch sequences as a Met with Pete Alonso hitting behind him than he did last year when he was playing in the Bronx and Aaron Judge followed him in the batting order. Soto was not complaining or casting aspersions at his new teammate, Alonso. He was merely stating a fact and said that he is adjusting to it.

Don’t get me wrong. I am far from a baseball purist, but Major League Baseball should consider dropping interleague play. If it is unwilling to do that, then it should severely limit it to geographic proximity of the teams such as the AL East vs. the NL East. The current MLB scheduling policy calls for each team to play at least one three-game series against every other team. MLB understandably feels fans in every city want to see stars such as Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto and Bryce Harper.

Starting pitching was a major concern for the Mets going into the 2025 season. Nominal ace Kodai Senga missed practically the entire 2024 season with an assortment of injuries. Sean Manaea, who was the Mets’ best pitcher last year, is on the shelf with an oblique injury, and he may not see the Citi Field mound until June. David Peterson had a breakthrough year in 2024 and pitched quite well in his first outing of the year against the Miami Marlins.
