Institution chains students to ground, they turn to each other in solidarity

In the eyes of many of its students and faculty, Emory University’s legacy is defined by an amalgamation of oppressive measures taken toward on-campus protests. The University continually contradicts its own mission of “apply[ing] knowledge in the service of humanity” by smothering its students’ attempts to embody that pledge through peaceful protest. Administrators themselves have weaponized harmful rhetoric to spur violence on campus, notably arrests, limiting Emory’s sham of open expression.

One year ago, the Emory University Police Department (EPD) and Atlanta Police Department (APD) removed peaceful student protestors from the Quadrangle. On Thursday morning, the same law enforcement organizations forcibly removed Emory students and community members from that same Quad. While deplorable, this scene is eerily familiar, speaking to a long legacy of student suppression and state violence on Emory’s campus.

My family and I went to the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta for the first time six years ago. It was a joyful experience, even for a grumpy teenager who thought she was too cool for a museum. I found it to be interactive and inspiring. The museum featured a video titled “Moments of Happiness,” in which people from all different walks of life, religion, race, class and experience came together in the most harmonic of moments.

Scientists began to observe homosexual relationships within the animal kingdom in the 19th century. Same-sex and mixed-sex relations are widespread in the animal world. As many as 1,500 species engage in homosexual behavior in the wild. Ranging from insects to mammals, homosexual tendencies are ingrained and accepted among members of the same species as simply sex.
Peace: A response beyond retaliation in the Middle East

Another blast has echoed through the Middle East, catapulting debris, belongings and people into the sky. On Jan. 29, what is believed to be an Iranian-backed drone struck an American base named Tower 22 in Jordan near the Syrian border. Tragically, three American soldiers were killed and over 40 injured. In typical American fashion, Biden launched strikes on 85 targets in Iraq and Syria that have reportedly wounded and killed an unknown number of people.

As the 2024 primary elections rumble forward, are once again asked to be a part of the electoral process, despite politicians efforts to disincentivize and minimize voters. The rich, white elite class within the United States have a greater effect on politics than others. As in previous elections, older voters are more likely to turn out in greater numbers than their young counterparts. Likewise, white voters have a greater turnout than people of color, as do upper-class voters.
