    In sixth grade, I read Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” for the first time. While it was an odd choice for a middle school English class, I rolled with it. Bradbury writes about a dystopian American future in which all books are banned and, by extension, freedom of speech has become a lost concept. Even with all the media out there about censorship, nothing reminds me more of our present moment than Bradbury’s words.

    One year ago, the Emory University Police Department (EPD) and Atlanta Police Department (APD) removed peaceful student protestors from the Quadrangle. On Thursday morning, the same law enforcement organizations forcibly removed Emory students and community members from that same Quad. While deplorable, this scene is eerily familiar, speaking to a long legacy of student suppression and state violence on Emory’s campus.

Dichotomies persist in our individual experiences: Oxford and the Atlanta campus, being a white student or a student of color, living on campus off, staying in Decatur for all four years or making Atlanta a larger part of your time here.

    I have always been terrified of not being good enough. School, friendships, relationships, family, clubs, internships — all are areas I desperately try to latch onto and not let go for fear of falling behind, or worse, being left behind purposefully. I struggle with being vulnerable in front of others and mourn moments of self-perceived weakness. Yet the wonderful thing about this world is its ability to fully transform perspectives at the opening of a door.
