This scientific commentary refers to ‘Default mode network electrophysiological dynamics and causal role in creative thinking’ by Bartoli et al. (https://doi.org/10.1093/brain/awae199). Despite what the term ‘default’ implies, the default mode network (DMN) is now recognized as a key intrinsic functional brain network essential for high-level human cognition.
