Bruce Sherden played Santa Claus, taking a bag of gifts to a family of 10 adopted by the officers for the season. Two astronauts ventured out into space to finish repairing the Hubble Space Telescope by installing a new radio transmitter and digital recorder.

1999 – 25 years agoRochester Mayo’s Alex Zagaria scored six goals in an 8-1 victory over Winona in girls hockey play. (Zagaria would play collegiate hockey at Dartmouth). Mayo Clinic optometrist Dennis Siemsen is working to get the word out regarding Mayo’s low vision service. Millions of Americans have low vision, but few medical centers have programs to assist these individuals.

1999 – 25 years agoGlenn Nycklemoe of Rochester is one of the three members named to the Augsburg College Board of Regents. Nycklemoe was elected bishop of the Southeast Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Church in America in June 1987. Sophomore David Zellmann scored 34 points to lead his Lewiston-Altura boys basketball team to a 75-55 victory over Wabasha-Kellogg. (Zellmann was inducted into the Winona State Warrior Hall of Fame in 2017).

1999 – 25 years agoAccording to a Baltimore-based healthcare information company, Rochester Methodist Hospital has been ranked as one of the top 100 hospitals in the country. The United Way of Olmsted County announced it has collected $3,585,376 for its 1999 fund-raising campaign. This exceeded the goal of $3.4 million.
