What is it about spending time in nature, especially when it comes to hiking through the woods? Recently, my husband and I spent some time in Faribault. We were there for a 5K trail race through the River Bend Nature Center . The day before the race, we wanted to do a little hiking and decided to check out the nature center after our waitress at Joe’s Sports Bar told us it was her favorite place. Her recommendation was spot on as it turned out to be a spectacular – and educational – hike.

More than 500 students attended this year's prom. ALEXANDRIA — Alexandria Area High School students got a chance to walk the red carpet Saturday, May 3, during the grand march at this year's prom. The 2025 theme was "A Night at the Red Carpet." Students had three different times to choose from for the grand march – 4, 5 or 6 p.m. Grand march took place at the Performing Arts Center at the high school. Emcees for the grand march were Abbey Hegg and Maria Mayer, sophomores at AAHS.

Donna Marie (Simonson) Fisher, age 90, of Glen Carbon, Illinois, entered eternal life on April 3, 2025. She was born on January 10, 1935 to Clifford and Lillian (Knarreborg) Simonson. She attended school in Alexandria and graduated from Alexandria High School. Donna was a creative, curious, lifelong learner. She attended college at the University of Minnesota, University of North Dakota, Drake University and graduated from the University of the Philippines with a bachelor’s degree in education.

BRANDON-EVANSVILLE โ Students from Brandon-Evansville walked the red carpet during the grand march at the 2025 Brandon-Evansville High School Prom. This year's theme was "Viva Las Vegas!" There were 70 students who attended the prom, which took place Saturday, May 3. The emcee during grand march was Sarah Wagner. Not only was there a grand march and dance, but students also got to participate in the post prom party.

ALEXANDRIA โ Kalon Prep Academy hosted its 2025 Prom on Friday, April 25. About 50 students, dressed to the nines, attended the event. The theme for this year was the Roaring 20s/The Great Gatsby. Grand march took place at the school, while the dinner and dance were held at the Legacy of the Lakes Boathouse. Their dinner was catered by Papa K's BBQ. "It was a gorgeous night and a super fun event," said Chris Kragenbring, the school's director.

DOUGLAS COUNTY — Sgt. Jacob Asfeld from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office may have just been doing his job on April 11, but his job was more important than ever that day. Asfeld saved the life of a 4-year-old boy who was choking and at the Douglas County Board meeting Tuesday, May 6, he was recognized and honored for his actions.

Jonathan Howard Kuhn, 53, passed away at home suddenly on Saturday, November 16, 2024. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 16, 2025, at Seven Dolors Church in Millerville. John will be interred in our ancestors’ cemetery near his cousin, Teddy Wagner. John was the child of Howard and Gladys Kuhn, born on May 23, 1971, in Eugene, Oregon. He attended St. Agnes Grade School, Charleston Catholic High School, Marshall University and West Virginia Institute of Technology.
