The surge unleashed by the Newbury Park High football team in two seasons with sophomore phenom Brady Smigiel at quarterback grabbed the spotlight Sunday. The Panthers a year ago earned their first playoff since 2017 and first postseason win since 2014. Now they’re a No. 1 seed in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs. Newbury Park is top-seeded in Division 5, and is headed to an all-local matchup in the first round Friday. The Panthers, co-champions of the Canyon League at 7-3, will host Ventura.

The late Pete Ackermann, one of the most prolific softball coaches in Southland softball annals, and renowned wrestling coach Ron Wilson, were among 13 inductees into the 39th class of the CIF-Southern Section Hall of Fame. The inductees were honored during a luncheon on Oct. 18 at the Grand Conference Center in Long Beach. Ackermann, who became a veritable institution as a coach and administrator at Oaks Christian School, posted a career record of 651-148-1 in 23 seasons as a softball coach.

Robert Maria had 317 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns as the Hueneme High football team stayed in the race for the Citrus Coast League title with a 28-21 win over visiting Santa Paula on Friday night. The senior running back ran for 233 yards on 36 carries and also caught three passes for 84 yards as the Vikings (2-7) improved to 2-1 in league play. "The kids played really well,” Hueneme coach Jake Goossen-Brown.
