Marin Alsop, one of the first women to helm a major American orchestra, offered another form of leadership at Abravanel Hall last week as she received a prestigious award that in years past has gone to prominent figures like Leonard Bernstein, John Williams and Yo-Yo Ma. When Kenadi Dodds finally made it on the stage of " America's Got Talent," a show she had unsuccessfully auditioned for twice before, she wanted to make a statement. Wearing rhinestone cowboy boots and a dress with a denim jacket, the then-15-year-old started strumming her acoustic guitar and belting "One Way Ticket to Tennessee," a song she had written at the age of 13 about her dream of becoming a country singer. She was timid when she talked to the show's judges.

That appears to remain the case for Season 17: During the most recent episode, which aired on Monday, six teenagers from Utah ended up advancing to the semifinals after navigating a tricky obstacle course that puts balance and upper body strength to the test.
