BRUSSELS — The European Union’s two biggest buyers of Russian liquefied natural gas are refusing to endorse Brussels' plan to ban Moscow’s gas, arguing they need more reassurances on the economic and legal consequences of the move before making a decision. France, the bloc’s top buyer, told POLITICO it prefers a strategy of hunting for alternative supplies. Belgium, in second place, wants a report detailing the economic fallout before making a decision.

The European Commission, the EU’s executive, based the conclusions on countries’ updated climate plans, which governments have been filing in recent months.

3 hours agoSarmadā, Syria - May 24, 2025 A group of Islamic protesters rampaged through a wedding hall in the Syrian city of Sarmada that was to host a concert by popular singer Mohammad Al-Sheikh, civil rights groups said. The protestors destroyed equipment in the hall while screaming “Allah Akbar.” No casualties were reported but the concert did not go ahead.

The head of the Council of Europe on Saturday pushed back against a call by nine EU countries to make it easier to expel migrants who commit crime. COE Secretary-General Alain Berset warned that courts must not be “weaponized” for political gain. In a statement released Thursday, Italy, Denmark, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland asked the European Court of Human Rights to review how it interprets the European Convention on Human Rights.
