More than 20,000 roaming dogs were reported to Auckland Council last year - a 78 percent increase since 2021 - but that was just a snapshot of the real problem. Roaming dogs can mean dog attacks, which have also seen a 76 percent increase over the last six years. The problem has led to the council introducing its first dedicated roaming dog patrol, which has been running for just over a year.

Sixty schools around the motu have been left without a tuck shop provider after the Libelle Group went into liquidation two weeks ago. Libelle was contracted to Compass, the government supplier for the scheme that has been plagued with issues since its relaunch this term. Anti-smoking advocates are concerned progress towards reducing the number of young people vaping could be swamped by something they say is even worse - oral nicotine pouches. The emerging craze of highly addictive nicotine pouches were placed under the lip and absorbed in the mouth commonly sold under the brand name ZYN. The sale of nicotine pouches was banned by the Labour government in 2020, but it remains legal to import from overseas, as long as it is for personal use.

In an effort to get thousands of roaming dogs off the streets and into forever homes Auckland Council is opening the country's first council-operated dog adoption centre in Pukekohe. The need is more pressing than ever with all Tāmaki Makaurau's dog shelters at capacity. Less than half of roaming dogs in the city were reclaimed by their owners last year - the lowest level in a decade.
