Yacht rock has had a moment of late. HBO’s Yacht Rock: A DOCKumentary was released last year to much chatter and commentary. This feels like a final establishment of the genre as an accepted and appreciated form of American popular music. Then again, how does one define “yacht rock”? The restrictive version by those who created the term and comedic web series in the 2000s? Accepting all “soft rock” of the 1970s and ’80s? Does a lyrical boat reference automatically qualify as yacht rock?

In addition to The Sonnentag, UW-Eau Claire’s new multi-use complex, two other athletic facilities in Eau Claire make their debut this autumn, as new venues for football and soccer have been constructed at North and Memorial high schools. Each consists of artificial turf fields, a bleacher stand with capacity for 1,500 people, a press box for media and team personnel atop the stand, and light towers. Together, the projects at both schools cost $5.5 million.

One decade after the first announcement of a huge donation by UW-Eau Claire alumni John and Carolyn Sonnentag and two years after groundbreaking on the project, what is now known as The Sonnentag opened in July. The 226,000-square-foot, $122 million facility along Menomonie Street, east of Clairemont Avenue, is the new home to UW-Eau Claire Blugolds basketball, indoor football practice, sports medicine, and more. Overseeing operations of The Sonnentag is General Manager Wyatt Tinnen.

In mid-February, the Wisconsin State Legislature passed new state Assembly and Senate district maps submitted by Gov. Tony Evers as part of the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s ruling on the constitutionality of the maps adopted in 2022. This will likely lead to near-equal chances that the Republican or Democratic parties could gain control of legislative majorities. Similar changes may be seen as part of our future Chippewa Valley-area elections.
