The Net Neutrality rules were introduced and implemented in 2015 and were designed to ensure that Internet service providers acted as neutral gateways and promoted a more open Internet. The 2015 Net Neutrality rules required Internet service providers to treat all Internet traffic equally—in terms of pricing, bandwidth, availability, etc. However, in 2017, under a new administration, the FCC voted to repeal and roll back the 2015 Net Neutrality rules.

On August 2, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a bill amending the Biometric Information Privacy Act (“BIPA”). The amendments address what many businesses viewed as excessively harsh financial penalties wrought by previous court precedent. Under recent Illinois court precedent, a business was viewed to have violated the act each time a biometric information data point was collected.

Florida, Oregon, Tennessee and Texas will join the ranks of the existing five U.S. state data protection laws that are in effect. Between 2025 and 2026, an additional eight U.S. states will have their data protection laws take effect as well, for a grant total of 17 effective state data protection laws.
