On January 21st, 2025, Islamic State’s Khurasan Province (ISKP) jihadists using automatic rifles shot a Chinese mining worker to death in Afghanistan’s Northeast Takhar Province while being driven with his interpreter to the Dasht-e-Qala district when their vehicle was ambushed. The Islamic State (IS) officially claimed the attack not long after, which is the latest in ISKP’s intensifying campaign of targeting foreign nationals.

On October 7 in Karachi, Pakistan, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) carried out a suicide bombing against a convoy of Chinese nationals departing from the country’s largest airport. Two Chinese nationals were killed and another was amongst at least 10 others who were injured in the blast. Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb stated that those targeted in the attack were involved in ongoing energy debt restructuring negotiations between China and the Pakistani government.
