The coffee giant Pret A Manger’s subscription scheme was the saviour of bleary-eyed office workers, helping to fuel them through the nine-to-five grind. For £30 a month, Club Pret customers could get up to five barista-made drinks a day and 20 per cent off food, but that is about to get a lot less generous. From September, for £5 a month, you will get up to five hot drinks for half price and the food discount is disappearing. From April the price will increase to £10 a month.

Landlords are rushing to sell their properties because they expect a capital gains tax rise and stricter renting rules under the new government. Labour has promised to strengthen tenant rights, including banning no-fault evictions and ending rental bidding wars, and has refused to rule out an increase in capital gains tax (CGT). The threat of higher taxes and more regulation has triggered a scramble to sell.

Lee Broders has a grand plan to hand a large portfolio of buy-to-let properties over to his three grandchildren when he dies so they can live off the rental income. He has made this plan even though his grandchildren are only six, five and two. During his lifetime he also intends to give them money to help with important milestones such as weddings, and he will do this by tapping into his stocks and shares and general investments. But there are conditions on his generosity.
