A second wave of cooler air is sliding through the northern tier of the country, bringing continued-cooler air to the forecast.

NOAA announced Tuesday, July 16th, that it is awarding a 106 million dollar contract to Gulfstream Aerospace Company for a fully modified G550 aircraft that will measure the atmosphere around hurricanes and tropical storms starting in 2028.

Are you ready for some heat relief? Two waves of cooler air will slide through the northern tier of the country through the week, bringing some much-needed cooler air to the forecast. In fact, the extended forecast from the weekend into early next week shows confidence in cooler-than-average temperatures for the central U.S., as highlighted by the Climate Prediction Center. Each year, the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) moves off the west coast of Africa following east-to-west trade winds, most common in June, July, and early August. While responsible for creating smoke-like haze across the mid and high levels of the atmosphere, the SAL is also helpful in suppressing tropical development.

10 Jul 2024 10:35 PMA severe weather opportunity is headed into the Upper Midwest this weekend and the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued an outlook for Sunday to account for the risk of tornadoes, hail and damaging winds. This includes much of Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota, including the Twin Cities. In our upper atmosphere, an area of low pressure slides through Friday and Saturday increasing lift to support thunderstorm development.

There is a LOW chance for development as highlighted by the National Hurricane Center, but it is not a zero possibility. Our low merges will have a stalled frontal boundary Friday into the weekend, bringing heavy rainfall to coastal North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic. This follows the remnants of Beryl impacting the Northeast on Wednesday.

Temperatures stay well above average through Tuesday before temps drop with Beryl's moisture and passing cold front. Heat advisories have been issued from the Mid-Atlantic and into parts of the East Coast because the heat is being exacerbated by the high humidity - dewpoints in the 70s thanks to Beryl's moisture. Temperatures will be hottest through I-95 where dew points in the 70s will make it feel like the 90s for many Northeast cities.
