Donald Trump’s barrage of executive orders last week included several related to immigration, including an attempt to limit birthright citizenship and declaring a national emergency at the southern border. The administration has also increased the number of mass arrests made by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with Philadelphia seeing the detention of seven people at a car wash on East Hunting Park Avenue on Tuesday. In the days since Donald Trump’s victory in Tuesday’s election, it has become increasingly clear that Latino voters — and particularly Latino voters in Pennsylvania — played a crucial role in sending him back to the White House. Nationally, nearly half of all voters who identified as Latino — about 46% — cast ballots for Trump, up from about a third of Latino voters in 2020.

As another presidential election year dawns, I know that immigration will once again be in the national spotlight. Yet in their own way, neither candidate takes the issue seriously. One is willing to pour billions of dollars into border security measures that don’t work and pass the buck by sending vulnerable asylum-seekers to Mexico. The other is Donald Trump. Something needs to be done.
