Overnight storms on Friday poured over soil warmed by April’s spring temperatures. In parts of southern Minnesota, those storms brought over an inch of rain in just one night. That’s good news for farmers. “When you look out around the landscape, everything’s going into the soil, which is very, very gratifying,” said meteorologist and climatologist Mark Seeley. “I think we're going to have more frequent chances for rainfall for the balance of the month as well.

The Minnesota legislature will only have one month to get bills signed and sent off once they return from a weeklong break for Passover and Easter. A couple of committees are working Friday to meet deadline and budget goals. The latest economic update for the state showed an estimated $244 million more than expected but also predicted economic growth will slow down in coming years.

April started off a bit cooler than normal but with springlike weather in the forecast and soil temperatures rising, farmers can start planting seeds. “A lot of them are ready to plant small grains like wheat, because the soil temperatures this week are up in the 40s,” said meteorologist and climatologist Mark Seeley.
