The life and work of pioneering poet and director Pier Paolo Pasolini casts a long shadow over this record from French artist Karen Jebane, also known as Golem Mecanique. The album’s title, which translates as “we are all in danger”, is derived from the final interview Pasolini gave before his still-unsolved murder in 1975, and a sense of threat pervades the record from start to finish. This is a dense, foreboding album, its scale and texture as unforgiving as a vast, broiling body of water.

It takes a while to sync up with this Joni Void record. The latest LP from the Montréal artist is a fluttery, meandering piece of work, somehow restless and comforting at the same time. It’s hard to know exactly where to start with it, not because it is necessarily opaque or alienating, but somehow over-familiar, like staggering around a city you’ve only dreamed about before. At one point, a distant voice even calls out “I know this place” in detached, glassy-eyed style.

At the risk of straw-manning a po-faced caricature of contemporary club culture, it’s always refreshing to hear a new techno record that’s unapologetically fun. It’s not that this stuff has to come with great punchlines or an exaggerated sense of joie de vivre, but when so much club music takes itself slightly too seriously, records which acknowledge the inherent mischief and intimacy of dance culture are a welcome addition to a crowded, occasionally dour field.

LC: Hiya Bill. Now, this feature often focuses on so-called ‘guilty pleasure’ songs – but you’ve chosen Underworld’s ‘Born Slippy’, which to my mind is pretty cool. Do you see it like that? BRJ: Yeah. I mean, I don’t feel much guilt about music, but I could’ve gone with Bon Jovi if I was gonna do something like that. LC: Go on. BRJ: I just like Bon Jovi, man. There’s no reason why I should, but I do. I just think his songs are really catchy.
