LAFAYETTE, La. — On a day that greatly resembled the one on which the Marshall football team last won a conference championship a decade ago, the Thundering Herd did it again. The persistent rains cleared out, but cloud cover remained as nightfall set in at Cajun Field on Saturday. But Marshall walked away with a trophy and its first title since joining the Sun Belt with a 31-3 victory over the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns to secure the Herd’s first 10-win season since 2015.

LAFAYETTE, La. — It was a moment a decade in the making and Marshall took its time celebrating a dominant 31-3 win over Louisiana in the 2024 Sun Belt Conference football championship game. In its first appearance there, the Thundering Herd (10-3) collected its seventh-straight victory and became the first visiting team to win the Sun Belt crown. The team basked in the glory of it until well after the home crowd had cleared out of Cajun Field.

LAFAYETTE, La. — Confetti and a trophy. That's the vision that brought Marshall offensive lineman Logan Osburn back to the Thundering Herd football team after a rocky 6-7 season in 2023. As he lifted the Sun Belt Conference football championship trophy beside his coach and in front of his teammates, the Cabell Midland High School alumnus was filled with emotion, realizing that his vision had become reality. "That's the reason I came back, to be honest," Osburn said.

Mere minutes after former Marshall football coach Charles Huff was named to the same position at Southern Miss, the Thundering Herd announced his replacement. Marshall athletic director Christian Spears announced Sunday afternoon that Tony Gibson has agreed to become Marshall's 32nd head football coach.

Marshall takes the series 2-1 over No. 13 Southern Miss, winning game three 6-0. Complete game shutout win for Clint Moak, holding the Golden Eagles to seven hits and striking out four -- 112 pitches. Herd gets a 2-for-4 outing from Tyler Kamerer in the rubber match. Great https://t.co/RQZc6wAGp0
