The North American Emissions Control Area (“ECA”), which has been in force well over a decade, is one of four existing ECAs around the world. Effective May 1, 2025, the Mediterranean Sea ECA will become the fifth. In March 2026, pursuant to MARPOL Annex VI, Regulation 13, the Canadian Arctic and Norwegian Sea will also be designated as ECAs, increasing the global total to seven. These two ECAs will become enforceable on March 1, 2027.

Blake Lopes’ intensity and confrontational style on the pitch earned her a spot on the Chico State women’s soccer roster as a true freshman in 2008. But it also landed her in hot water on several occasions, threatening her place on the team. “I came in hot my freshman year,” she admits, referencing the season she got five of the team’s nine yellow cards. Fortunately for Lopes (Exercise Physiology, ’12), Head Coach Kim Sutton saw a forest of potential beyond the trees of trouble.

Nate Farrington has always been a climber: first, it was the apple tree in his grandmother’s back yard; then, as a young teenager, he took to scaling buildings in his hometown of Syracuse, New York. Caves, canyons, and walls of ice followed. Eventually, he advanced to giant sequoias—the most massive trees on Earth. Most recently, on January 16, 2024, Farrington climbed into the program director’s seat at Adventure Outings (AO).
