    Five-year-old gelding Great Southernland had a winning drought longer than his name, but on Sunday he had his day in the sun. Initially a $360,000 buy as a yearling by none other than Coolmore's Tom Magnier, it has been a slip-and-slide down the ladder for Great Southernland. Starting out with Chris Waller, the horse then went to Aidan St Vincent, before Clint Lundholm took the reins and eventually his current trainer, Kylie Kennedy.

His 7YO gelding Uncle Charlie broke the maiden at start No.25 in the Ken & Roger Browne Memorial Steeplechase (3900m) at Te Rapa on Saturday in fashion that needs to be seen to be believed. Sent out as a $19 shot in the seven-horse field, Uncle Charlie had a few ahead of him in the market - until it became a 'last man standing' race when chaos ensued around the midway point of the race.
