A few years ago, I signed up for a fitness class at a climbing gym. Their policy was that before they could register me in their system to even enter the gym, they had to teach me how to use belaying systems and fall safety techniques. Last weekend Bentley College hosted the Northeast Ocean Racing Symposium, a day of lectures, panels, and networking centered around all things offshore. After a long winter, the late-March event was a welcome opportunity to get excited about the coming season and reconnect with the community. The symposium is now in its third year and co-sponsored by the four major offshore races out of New England–The Newport-Bermuda, Marblehead-Halifax, Bermuda One-Two, and Marion-Bermuda races.

“This is by far the best finish line I’ve ever crossed. Today, I can confidently say I’m the happiest man in the world,” reported an exhausted Charlie Dalin shortly after crossing the Vendée Globe finish line on January 14, 2025. The 40-year-old skipper had spent 64 days, 19 hours, and 22 minutes at sea, racing solo around the world to win the 2024/25 Vendée Globe in MACIF Santé Prévoyance and smashing the course record by more than nine days.

At a little table outside of the train station in Narbonne, France, my friend Derick set two glasses in front of me, one with emerald liquid, the other a deep amethyst. We’d spent several days picking our way by train across the southern coast of Spain and France on our way to the Cannes Yachting Festival. We had precious few days left together before I had to get to work, and he had to catch a flight.

RT @theoceanrace: The Top Speed of the 14th edition of The Ocean Race presented by @BandG_Sailing goes to #Biotherm who reached 40.4 knots!…

Good news resulting from a proactive, effective approach from the race organization! Kudos to them. Still, the work's not done, and we need female skippers back in the race next edition.

Another reason to celebrate! This edition of @theoceanrace featured more female sailors than in any of the previous events in the Race’s 50-year history. https://t.co/rRSWf2gT4J

RT @sailmagazine: @11thHourTeam HAS WON @theoceanrace, becoming the first American team in the race's 50 year history to do so! https://t.…
