When it comes to my platformers, I have practically no preference between two dimensions or three. I spent so much of my younger years playing every 2D mascot platformer I could get my tiny hands on, and as I grew and the third dimension suddenly appeared in my games I was happy to jump around new vast environments with glee. There are a few middle grounds to be found in the platforming dimensions as well, and one of my favourites of these is when a 3D platformer features flat 2D characters.

As someone who is always looking for his next platforming fix, I’m always intrigued when a platformer comes along that’s more focused on telling an interesting story than jumping across chasms. The launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 has been an exciting time for all of us gamers, but it has to be said that the line-up of launch games have had an air of familiarity to them. The vast majority of Switch 2 games currently available are remakes and ports, and while it’s been exciting playing all these great games on a gorgeous new handheld, it’s hard to deny a lingering urge to play something new.

With hundreds and hundreds of exciting games releasing every year, there’s never enough time to catch up on older titles you missed the first time around. The sad truth is that it’s just impossible to play everything, and some wonderful games will always slip through the cracks. Thankfully new console launches often feature a few older games ported to your shiny new toy, and the Switch 2 launch line-up has plenty of these to choose from.
