By Lyndsie Kiebert-CareyReader ContributorMany mothers will receive cards and novelty coffee mugs this May dubbing them “#1 Mom,” but only one Sandpoint woman could ever boast the titles of both Idaho Mother of the Year and National Mother of the Year: Helen Thompson. I heard about Helen in January, when a friend of my grandfather called me.

By Lyndsie Kiebert-CareyReader ContributorIn my brief time as a parent, I’ve come to know that the ultimate joy of raising a small person is sharing things with them. So far, this sharing has mostly included taking my 15-month-old son, Liam, to places I love, giving him bites of the food I enjoy, playing him my favorite music and the like. He’s proven to be an ardent observer, and his recent use of “Whoa!” in relation to any new discovery makes it all the more satisfying for all involved.

If you don’t believe me, ask Rotten Tomatoes, where SOR boasts a 92% critic rating.

By Lyndsie Kiebert-CareyReader StaffThis missive has made it into the pages of the Reader against all odds from a world so far removed from reality that time and space lack any meaning. That world? First-time motherhood. My husband Alex and I welcomed our son, Liam, on July 18. Born with the help of three incredible midwives at the Sandpoint Birthing Center, all 22 inches of our nearly nine-pound baby boy arrived without incident — notwithstanding the 24-hour labor that coaxed him into the world.
