Cape Hatteras Secondary School (CHSS) will host their first playoff game of the 2023 NCHSAA Men’s Soccer Championships at home in Buxton against Lakewood High School of Salemburg on Monday, October 30, at 6:00 p.m.The Cape Hatteras Hurricanes have a season record of 9-8, while Lakewood enters the Buxton home game with a record of 6-13-1. The CHSS soccer team won the Atlantic Five 1A Conference with a 5-1 record and the team is the #9 seed in the 1A playoff bracket.

The ongoing progress of the Island Inn & Commons project on Ocracoke Island was celebrated at an outdoor event on Wednesday, October 25, that attracted roughly 100 attendees. The years-long project, which is spearheaded by the Ocracoke Preservation Society (OPS), is a large undertaking with multiple partners and volunteers who are working to transform the expansive site of the historic 1901 Island Inn, (also known as the Odd Fellows Lodge), into a new visitor center and public greenspace.

The 6th annual Festival Latino de Ocracoke will take place on Ocracoke Island on the first weekend of November. Produced by the island non-profit, Ocracoke Alive, in partnership with Ocracoke’s vibrant Latino community, the festival will feature music, ballet folklorico dances, incredible food, games, and more. The festival kicks off on Friday, November 3, with day performances and workshops for Ocracoke School students with the Venezuelan harpist, Larry Bellorin.

The second “Dialogue With A Director“ will be held at the Baum Center on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The title of November’s program is “Documents of Death: Introduction to Funeral Documents and Paperwork.” The regularly scheduled sessions (which started in October) feature guest speaker and funeral director Courtney N. The month of October is nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and on Hatteras Island, a number of local restaurants and businesses have joined the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation (HICF) in their annual Drink Pink Campaign, which raises funds through island-wide libations. HICF is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that provides support for cancer patients and their families who live on Hatteras Island.
