    It was a quick turnaround for Madisonville City Council, as the governing body approved first reading of the 2025-26 budget on May 5 and passed the budget ordinance into law just a week later in a special called meeting Monday. The city will begin operating under the new spending measure on July 1. The special session also replaced the regularly scheduled meeting for the third Monday of the month. The total estimate for the spending plan comes in at $40.2 million.

    Providence City Council met briefly Tuesday to hear the letter of resignation from Mayor James "Butch" Hackney. The first-term mayor stated in the letter that he was stepping down for health reasons. He did not elaborate on the condition. Hackney was not present at the meeting. The council will now begin the search for a new mayor. The city will accept letters of interest beginning Wednesday. All letters must be turned in by close of business on Thursday, May 15.

The proposed spending measure comes in at $40.2 million, with the police department and dispatch the largest line at $10.1 million. The fire department is second at $8.9 million. General government operations are expected to account for $4.3 million. For the first time, the Kentucky Sports Factory is included as an operational segment of city services.
