BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – An inmate at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center was removed from life support on Thursday, more than two weeks after he was assaulted and critically injured by another inmate, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. BCSO said Robert Parker, 48, was assaulted by Tommy Lucero, 45, inside a cell on June 2. A facility nurse who was conducting follow-up medical checks with inmates saw Lucero attacking Parker, BCSO said.

Eight people were arrested in connection with smuggling drugs into the Bexar County jail, according to a spokesperson for the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. A BCSO spokesman confirmed to KSAT Investigates Monday that four people and four inmates will face charges related to an ongoing organized crime investigation. Multiple deputies have also been terminated, the spokesman said. Sheriff Javier Salazar is expected to have a press conference at 3 p.m. to provide additional details about the arrests.
