Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced on April 18, a controversial proposal to increase the budget of the L.A. Police Department and hire hundreds of new officers, as announced in the mayor’s first city budget in City Hall. The proposed budget would increase the LAPD’s budget by almost 119 million, a 6.3% increase from last year’s budget. “I believe that living in a safe neighborhood is the right of every Angeleno,” Bass said in her budget proposal.

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) reached a tentative labor contract on Friday, March 24, with LAUSD following the district’s employee and supportive staff three day strike over compensation rates with the school board. Approximately 30,000 SEIU Local 99 members will vote April 3-7 on the proposed labor contract, which included a 30% wage increase demanded by the union for its workers, retroactive payments, bonus payments and increased health benefits.

USC students received a puzzling email from the Department of Public Safety on Thursday about a gas leak at the Neely Petroleum Engineering Building that sent one person to the hospital due to an injury sustained from the incident.
