Torres Ascurra et al. examined wild potato variants from across the Americas and identified a pattern recognition receptor called PERU, which recognizes a P. infestans peptide. When PERU binds a protein fragment from P.

Behavior Social physiologyCaroline AshColonies of social insects have sharply defined divisions of labor, from nursing and guarding to foraging and cleaning. Ant colonies thus provide convenient models for exploring the relationships between an animal’s biology and its social environment. To disentangle the multiple contextual factors that add complication and redundancy to a social environment, Kay et al. conducted a multiomics study of the carpenter ant Camponotus fellah.

Agriculture Predicting yield in the fieldMaddy SealeMost plant gene expression studies are performed in controlled laboratory conditions. However, gene expression can be very different when plants are grown in the constantly changing environments of fields. Additionally, expression patterns can vary even between genetically identical individuals. De Meyer et al. sequenced transcripts from the leaves of field-grown oilseed rape (canola) plants (Brassica napus).

Plant Breeding Ethiopian farmers inform wheat breedingMaddy SealeLocal farming practices are best understood by the farmers themselves. Gesesse et al. combined Ethiopian farmers’ knowledge with genetic data on durum wheat to assist breeding. Smallholder farmers from three sites were skilled at assessing and differentiating among durum wheat varieties. Farmer preferences varied in relation to yield, morphology, and phenology depending on locality.
