Heights council hears about alternative public transportation options

Members of the Harker Heights City Council received a presentation on an alternative public transit service during Tuesday’s workshop. As the city looks for possible alternatives to the Hill Country Transit District, known as the HOP, the council heard from Transit Ridesharing Inclusive Public-Private Partnership (TRIPPP) consultant Rick Koch about using the program to create partnerships with existing ride-shares in the city.

The United Way of the Tri-County Area hosted its annual kickoff luncheon for its fiscal year 2024-2025 donation campaign on Thursday. Around 100 people representing various organizations and cities attended the luncheon. Many attendees even dressed up to fit this year’s theme — “Kick Up Your Boots and Tip Your Hat to the United Way.”The Killeen Civic and Conference Center was decorated with cowboy and country themed decorations and entertainment.
Oncor’s appeal against Nolanville City Council succeeds

The ongoing dispute between the city of Nolanville and Oncor came to a close after the Public Utility Commissions of Texas (PUCT) granted Oncor’s appeal. After Nolanville City Council members denied a rezoning request by Oncor last fall, the electric company filed an appeal with PUCT to overturn the council’s decision. On Thursday, PUCT ruled in favor of Oncor. Nolanville interim City Manager Teresa Chandler shared the statement from PUCT regarding the matter.

Merlin was a 9-year-old black German shepherd who loved to collect rocks and play with his rubber tire toy. He was also a beloved K-9 dog who worked with the Killeen Police Department for seven years until Monday, when he passed due to health complications. Merlin and his handler, Officer David Cole, worked in explosion detection and apprehension work and were regularly at local events to offer their protection. Merlin joined the team in March 2016 when he was 2.
CTC to receive $300K in grant funds from Texas Workforce Commission

The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has awarded around $83 million to 40 grantees across the state in support of adult education and literacy. One of those grantees was Central Texas College, which will receive $352,110, according to a news release Tuesday.

It’s back to the drawing board for the Harker Heights City Council. Just hours after the council passed a fiscal year 2025 that included eliminated funding for the Hill Country Transit District, or the HOP, and other nongovernmental organizations, Mayor Michael Blomquist said he is vetoing the budget ordinance. Mayor Pro Tem Tony Canterino offered the motion to approve the budget but zero out the outside agency funding. His motion was supported by Councilmen Sam Halabi and Shane Hodyniak.
