    More than a decade after work began on the Orange Blossom Trail, the Redlands City Council has approved a contract to build the final segment of the 7.5-mile path. At its meeting Tuesday, May 6, the council unanimously approved a $960,145 contract with Tryco General Engineering in Loma Linda to finish the trail, which has been built in stages. Construction on the first phase began in late 2014.

    All Riverside County shelters will offer free adoptions until Thursday, May 15. A nationwide call sponsored by BISSELL Pet Foundation, a nonprofit working to end pet homelessness, is presenting the “Empty the Shelters” event and waiving adoption fees, according to a Riverside County news release. The event started Thursday, May 1, and the Riverside County Department of Animal Services is urgently asking the community to help quell overcapacity of larger dog breeds within the shelters.

    Riverside County residents will have more opportunities to bring home furry friends, following a move to keep animal shelters open on Sundays. To kick off the new schedule, there will be free adoptions from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 27, as well as vaccination, microchipping and spay-and-neuter services for adopted pets, according to a county news release.
