HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. — Some Volunteer Fire Departments say they need more money to stay operational in Hamilton County. The departments went to the county commission recently, saying that they cannot keep up with the growth in the county. That includes the population and the amount of new homes and neighborhoods. One fire chief we spoke with says his department also cannot find enough volunteers, and repairs and upgrades to equipment could cost them millions of dollars.

Past versions of the budget have drawn critiques from parents, teachers, and school board members. CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A new city ordinance in Chattanooga grants the fire department the power to deem a structure a total loss and demolish it. Tennessee state law already allowed fire departments to make this decision. But until now, Chattanooga's rules meant that code inspectors had to decide whether a building should remain standing. Firefighters say that can sometimes lead to dangerous situations where fires can reignite or unsafe buildings can later collapse.
