PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - Thursday was a momentous day for Catholics all over the world, including here in Portland. Cardinal Robert Prevost was named the new pope; The first American in history to hold the position. “A real stunner to have the first pope from the United States elected,” said Archbishop Alexander Sample, of the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon. Archbishop Sample said he was surprised to hear Prevost’s name announced at the Vatican Thursday morning, but pleasantly so.

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - Car theft in Portland has gone down dramatically in recent years, according to the Portland Police Bureau’s (PPB) stolen vehicle dashboard. During a press conference on Tuesday, Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez credited the decrease to the Auto Theft Taskforce. According to the stolen vehicle dashboard, Portland saw its highest number of stolen cars in 2020, with a record of 10,900.

OREGON CITY Ore. (KPTV) - For the first time in nearly 100 years, Clackamas County has a brand-new courthouse. State and county leaders gathered outside the new building, located at 1000 Courthouse Road, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday. The old courthouse, located along the Willamette River in downtown Oregon City, was built in 1936 and was designed to serve a community of 50,000 people.

BANKS Ore. (KPTV) - On Thursday, the Banks Fire Department hosted multiple agencies to train loggers to call for a helicopter in an emergency. “Always important to be prepared if anything were to go wrong out in the woods,” said Jonathan Metz, a forester with Weyerhaeuser. More than 200 people gathered at the fire station along Highway 26 on Thursday.
