On Oct. 19, 2024, more than 20 people fell into the Duplin River when the gangway collapsed on Sapelo Island during a Cultural Day celebration. Seven people were killed and more than a dozen were injured.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Duval County judge on Wednesday dropped a charge for a man accused of bringing a knife to a Jacksonville City Council meeting Tuesday, where the man and two others were arrested. Conor Cauley, 29, Teagan Belloit, 25, and Leah Grady, 24, were arrested and escorted out of the council's meeting at city hall after council leadership requested they leave because they were "disrupting the proceedings," the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office told First Coast News.

The U.S. dollar was originally backed by gold, known as the "gold standard." This practice ended nationwide in 1933, and the U.S. stopped the practice of exchanging gold for dollars in 1971.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A shooting at a Jacksonville apartment complex early Monday morning left a man in his mid-30s injured after he sustained multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. JSO Sgt. Ray Reeves said patrol officers were dispatched to Westwood Apartments, located at 1171 South Lane Ave., around 3:30 a.m. in reference to the shooting. When they arrived, Reeves told First Coast News the officers found the man suffering from several gunshot wounds.
