Brigadier Selvy Mohlala has been fired for defending the suspended Mpumalanga police commissioner Lt-Gen Semakaleng Daphney Manamela in an interview with Newszroom Afrika. Nobuhle Mthembu of ActionSA ActionSA in Joburg says it will challenge City Power’s R200 monthly service fee that it has imposed on prepaid electrify users. The fee, which was passed by council in May, kicked in on Monday and affects about 250,000 prepaid users in the city. The R200 is automatically deducted when the user buys electricity. City Power said it was doing this to share the costs of maintaining stolen and damaged infrastructure with the customers.

The ANC, EFF, Patriotic Alliance, Al Jamah, COPE and the Good Party are some of the political parties who voted in favour of the R200 prepaid electricity users’ monthly service fees. The fee which was proposed twice before but later withdrawn, took effect with other tariff rates hikes in Joburg on Monday and it has since caused unhappiness among financially-burdened homeowners in the city. It was passed by council in May as part of the budget presented by Joburg Finance MMC Dada Morero.
