Editor’s summaryProtein design methods have made rapid progress in recent years with the introduction of machine learning–based generative models. Frank et al. now debut an alternative method called relaxed sequence optimization that enables efficient and robust convergence toward optimal structures on the basis of iterative sequence evolution using gradient descent–based hallucination.

AbstractPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic molecules containing adjacent aromatic rings. Infrared emission bands show that PAHs are abundant in space, but only a few specific PAHs have been detected in the interstellar medium. We detect 1-cyanopyrene, a cyano-substituted derivative of the related four-ring PAH pyrene, in radio observations of the dense cloud TMC-1 using the Green Bank Telescope.

Editor’s summaryThe gut microbiota generate diverse bioactive compounds that can potentially affect host physiology. During bouts of malnutrition, the microbiota also become depleted, which can compound the harm to the host, especially in childhood. Cheng et al.

Agrochemical Effects A damaging brewSacha VignieriChemicals applied to crops can exert harmful effects at concentrations far below lethal levels. Modern insect populations are exposed to a soup of agrochemicals composed of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides, among others. Although many of these compounds have been tested singly, and for lethality, they neither occur in nature alone nor only affect animals through mortality. Gandara et al.
