The first week of May last year was all about kids for us at the NI. On Friday, May 3, 2024, we had a pizza party at A.J. Mitchell Elementary School for the top 75 third-grade artists who participated in our annual Nogales International Drawing Contest, the largest pool of winners in contest history. The following Saturday morning, the NI and Green Valley News/Sahuarita Sun presented trophies to the 19 finalists of our fourth annual AZ19 Most Influential Youth Awards.

Michael Humphries, who took over as interim port director for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in November 2017 and later took full command of operations in Nogales, retired effective Friday, Feb. 28. No one raised an eyebrow when the City Council increased the compensation by what could be $7,600 per month for an outside law firm already being paid $15,000 monthly in lieu of hiring a city attorney. Our last city attorney, Jose Luis Machado, was paid $144,000 per year, plus benefits. Conceivably, the firm Pierce Coleman could receive more than a quarter of a million dollars for their services after 12 months – not including their travel and other expenses. kAm%96 967EJ 3F>A :?

I had to chuckle when I read part of a recent news release from the Board of Supervisors regarding former Santa Cruz County Treasurer Liz Gutfahr that read in part, “We will continue to provide straightforward updates as things progress.”There had been no “straightforward updates.” In fact, County Manager Jesus Valdez had been running interference when the Nogales International requested information about the case.

Nogales and Santa Cruz County are often an afterthought when it comes to investment of federal dollars. When we do procure funding, we have the port authority, political advocates, grant writers and others to thank, because it’s not manna from heaven. For the most part, our local leaders do not possess the necessary gravitas to make it happen. Any resulting jobs and services often go to people or entities outside of our community.

My fellow readers,I regret to inform you that our anticipated Friday-only edition has been delayed until closer to our 99th anniversary on May 3, instead of April 5 as originally announced.
