Short-term heat stress affects the morphology and function of the plant Golgi apparatus in a reversible manner. The autophagy component AUTOPHAGY 8 relocalizes to heat stress-induced vacuolated Golgi cisternae and contributes to their restoration, revealing a role of this protein outside of the canonical autophagy pathway. Current global warming poses an increasing threat to food security worldwide1.

HighlightsThe ubiquitin–proteasome system (UPS) and autophagy are key proteolytic pathways controlling many cellular processes, from degradation of superfluous, damaged, or misfolded proteins, to supporting development and stress responses. The complexity of the interplay between both degradation pathways is starting to be unraveled. One such example is the reciprocal turnover of their components (i.e., autophagy components degraded via the proteasome, and proteasomes recycled by autophagy).
