With district tournaments just around the corner, local high school tennis players were getting in some of their last few practice swings this past weekend in Katy and Baytown. At the Katy Tournament, Friendswood walked away with three first-place finishes, including top honors in the girls “A4” singles flight won by Alyssa Borda. The Mustangs also grabbed firsts in the girls “A3” doubles (Bella Benson/Neela Juarez) and boys “A4” doubles (Emerson Houghton/Lane Soileau).

Clear Creek’s Katelyn Gross/Dylan Ferraro, Clear Springs’ Priyanka Kamath and Dickinson’s Pablo DeAoritta each turned in impressive third-place finishes at two of the state’s biggest high school tennis tournaments held throughout the county on Saturday. Gross/Ferraro teamed up in the “A” top-8 flight mixed doubles to claim bronze at the 18th annual Kemah Boardwalk Invitational, while Kamath was doing likewise in the “A” top-8 flight girls singles.

Mother Nature certainly had the upper hand on the Kemah Boardwalk Invitational and Beachcomber Classic tennis tournaments, teasing the two with off-and-on rain predictions Friday and Saturday. But the show must go on, and tournament officials of both eventually were able to pull off the near improbable. Wet weather forecasts early last week prompted the two to erroneously cancel Friday’s action completely.
