A resolution was passed in the state Assembly on Tuesday, April 1 to honor the 123rd birthday of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, zt”l, with 123 days of learning. This year, the Rebbe’s birthday falls on April 9, 2025, which corresponds to the 11th of Nissan, during the holiday of Passover. For many years this event was highlighted with remarks from Rabbi Shmuel Butman, z”l from the Assembly rostrum in Albany.

One drama engulfing New York is the race for mayor of New York City. A late entry into the race is former Governor Andrew Cuomo, 67, who resigned the governor’s office in 2021 amid sexual misconduct allegations and a $5.1 million book deal that Attorney General Letitia James took Cuomo to court to resolve. Each of Cuomo’s failings, and there are many, will be fresh fodder for the others making their bid for the top spot governing the Big Apple.

January All About Hochul Vs. Republicans; Democrats Mostly SilentJanuary began with the swearing in of new members. There are 21 new members of the Assembly, six Republicans and 15 Democrats. Two Democrats, both from Brooklyn, were cross-endorsed by the Republican party – freshman member Kalman Yeger (D – Midwood) and four-term Assemblywoman Jaime Williams (D – Canarsie) – while four-term Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein (D – Borough Park) was cross-endorsed by the Conservative party.

New York State is the ninth largest economy in the world. The budget is larger than that of most countries. California ($322 billion) and the United States budget are larger than New York’s budget. The New York State budget proposed by Governor Kathy Hochul on January 21 totaled $252 billion, an 8.16 percent increase over the amount she proposed in 2024.

The president, president-elect, senators, representatives, state legislators, as well as friends and family here in the U.S. have all reacted with dismay, shock, and disbelief that 21-year-old Capt. Omer Maxim Neutra was declared dead by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Monday after being killed near Nir Oz, a kibbutz near the country’s southern border, on October 7, 2023, during the Hamas massacre. Omer was a tank platoon commander in the IDF’s 77th Battalion of the 7th Brigade.
