If I were to ask you to choose a work of fiction which best resembles 2025 so far, the easy answer is some dystopian nightmare. You wouldn't be far off from the truth, especially when looking at our neighbours to the south. Octavia Butler's The Parable of the Sower, Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, and honestly the entire genre of political dystopia books and movies are looking more and more like documentaries instead of works of fiction.

Fire crews are responding to a structure fire in Merville, with RCMP, BC Ambulance and BC Hydro on scene. The fire is located at 6167 Tsolum River Road. Oyster River, Merville and Courtenay crews are on scene and requested mutual aid from the Cumberland Fire Department. At 10:45 a.m., a tender truck was en route from Cumberland. An excavator was also en route just before 11 a.m. A mutual aid request for manpower was also sent out to the Comox Fire Department, which arrived at 11:25.

About 10 years ago, the City of Courtenay asked people what they wanted to see for downtown. There was a whole to-do about it, with people gathering at the Native Sons Hall and discussing the possible futures about downtown Courtenay with city planners and other officials. The goal was to put together a vision for downtown for the next decade, which is ending right about now.

A young Courtenay-based cellist will be performing on the National Youth Orchestra of Canada’s 65th Anniversary Tour this year. Claire Mindell is a 17 year old cellist from Courtenay who has been chosen to play with the orchestra. Mindell currently plays with the Symphony Orchestra and other regional ensembles. “I’m most looking forward to the repertoire, meeting new friends, and working with Naomi Woo," she said, referring the conductor and educator at NYO.
