On Thursday, MP Gord Johns (Courtenay-Alberni) re-introduced a bill that aims to include community-based mental health, addictions, and substance use services in Canada’s universal, public health care system. Johns previously introduced the bill in October 2024 on World Mental Health Day and took the first opportunity to re-table it. The Mental Health Parity Act, Bill C-201, is the first Private Member’s Bill to be introduced in the House of Commons in the 45th Parliament.

A bridge at the end of 6th street in Courtenay is a bit of a hard sell, if that's the only thing the City of Courtenay does. Looked at in isolation, a bridge at 6th street is kind of a weird idea. It will go from a relatively unused part of a park to a street at the bottom of a steep hill that is used mainly by contractors and people going to a hardware store.

The federal NDP party has named its critic portfolios as Parliament kicked off this week. Each of the seven MPs will have a few roles in the new Parliament. Though the NDP will not be receiving official party status this time around, interim leader Don Davies said that the party will still be working to serve Canadians. “We heard loud and clear from voters in every province and territory that life is too expensive and they want a strong economy in an independent Canada," Davies said.

Trails in the Puntledge River area are getting an improvement this spring, with crews on site beginning in June. BC Hydro will be undertaking the improvements on both sides of the river starting on June 9. The work will include resurfacing trails and replacing aging bridges, culverts, and boardwalks, extending the life of the trails and making them safer.
