Strawberries Romanoff Author: Marcelle Bienvenu ⅓ cup sugar ⅓ cup Grand Marnier or Cointreau 2 teaspoons freshly grated lemon zest 2 pints fresh strawberries, washed, hulled and patted dry 2 cups sweetened whipped cream Fresh mint sprigs for garnish Combine the sugar, Grand Marnier (or Cointreau) and lemon zest in a large bowl and stir to dissolve the sugar. Add the strawberries and stir gently to coat evenly.

Holiday Drinks And Some Num Nums It appears that the holidays are upon us, and I have done little to nothing in preparation. I checked the pantry and freezer and the stash of liquor in the bar cabinet. Not too bad. While it was rather late to try to hostess a cocktail party, there was still time to invite the neighbors for a drinks and num-nums. My mother coined this phrase whenever she had to prepare pick-up foods for a festive gathering.

Roasted Beets Can’t Be Beat It’s that time of year when we want to cozy up to a fire and invite friends over for a visit and an informal gathering. Here is a menu that can easily be put together. Let whatever is in season at the supermarket or your local farmers market dictate your meal. Carrots, beets, parsnips and other root vegetables are in season and with just a little attention to flavors, you can’t beat roasted beets.

A Southern favorite My mother was known for “putting up” okra, maque choux, figs, pears and pickled anything, but her favorite was mirlitons (she called them “mellie-tons”). Around this time of year, she headed out in search of these for her final “putting up” for the summer. Although they were often available in grocery stores, she wanted ones that were homegrown. I never understood why she didn’t have her own vine.

The joy of catching and cooking fish I learned to fish from my father. When I was a youngster he often took me with him to drop a line in the brown-green languid waters in the Atchafalaya Basin. I enjoyed the time we spend together on the water that teemed with sac-a-lait, perch, goggle-eye and gaspergou. Even as a youngster, I was enthralled by the sights, sounds and smells that surrounded us while we quietly meandered through the swamp, catching a few here, a few there.

The season of Lent has arrived. And I’m betting that there are many who partied much too hard during the Carnival season and would welcome the season of repentance, prayer and sacrifice with open arms. Well, maybe not open arms, but at least might relish the thought of six weeks of Lent as a time to have a spiritual renewal of the soul, not to mention some recuperation of the body. Most of the meals prepared during Lent in New Orleans were referred to as Lenten soups or in French, potage maigres.

A simple supper for the season When I was a youngster, my family celebrated Labor Day weekend by gathering for what we considered was the last holiday of the summer. Mama and Papa’s menu for the day never changed. Barbecued chicken, cooked long and slow on the locally made grill fashioned with a 55-gallon barrel. The aroma tickled our taste buds.
