The Master of the container ship involved in a fatal collision with a tanker in North Sea has denied a charge of gross negligence manslaughter of crew member. Vladimir Motin, 59, Captain of the Portuguese-flagged Solong which collided with the Stena Immaculate on 10 March has entered a plea of not guilty to gross negligence manslaughter, via video link from prison, in hearing at the Old Bailey in London.

The Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) for the week ended 30 May was up 30% at 2072.71 points an increase of 486.5 points on the previous week. The sharp rise in container spot rates comes as the market reacts to an agreement earlier in the month between the US and China which saw a 145% tariff on Chinese imports reduced to 30% for a period of 90 days from 14 May while the two sides continue negotiations on reciprocal trade relations.

India’s Director General (DG) of Shipping Shyam Jagannathan told a news conference on Wednesday, “Our primary inference is that the vessel sank due to mechanical failure of the ballast management system.”The MSC Elsa 3 was on a voyage Vizhinjam to Kochi when it developed a 26 degree starboard list on 24 May and the vessel sank on the morning of 25 May. “We have no evidence of other reasons.
