The Conservatives will keep the lights on by building more gas power plants, while Labour panders to its Just Stop Oil mates. That’s the government’s message as it seeks to put clear green water between it and Labour on the pathway to Net Zero by 2050. But does it make sense? Gas power plants, after all, are supposed to last for 40-odd years. Bear with me while I kick the tyres.

There was a conference earlier this month in Edinburgh on the work of the late Tom Nairn, the Scottish political theorist best known as the author of The Break Up of Britain, published in 1976. The symposium, The UK's Crisis of Democracy: a Conference Salute to Tom Nairn, of course carved out time to discuss Northern Ireland. "All present believed re-unification inevitable and that a united Ireland would be led by Sinn Fein's Mary-Lou", was the concise summary offered by one observer.

Who killed Yevgeny Prigozhin? As Whodunnits go, it seems somehow lacking in mystery. Not though for Russian state television. Ihor Markov, a former pro-Russian MP in Ukraine and now a political pundit, reckons that only two countries had the wherewithal to knock off Prigozhin. It could have been the US, but they would have opted for a Hollywood blockbuster like the rocket that killed Qasem Soleimani, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards general.
