As a pioneer of the first-person shooter genre, Doom laid the foundation for its contemporaries but has also never rested on its laurels. Doom 3 steered the franchise toward survival horror. The 2016 reboot dared to revisit and refine the old-school formula in an era of Call of Duty-likes. Doom Eternal, for better or worse, implemented parkour-esque platforming. Doom: The Dark Ages offers perhaps the biggest and most impressive shake-up of the series’ tried and true formula.

Update 4/30/2025: Bloomberg reports 100 employees have been laid off at Respawn, part of a larger series of cuts – roughly 200-300 staff members – across EA as a whole. Bloomberg also reports that one of the two incubation projects Respawn has canceled was an extraction shooter set within the Titanfall universe. As an incubation project, the title was very early in development.

Doom: The Dark Ages doesn’t launch until May 15, but the review embargo lifted today. I’ve had a busy week writing Death Stranding 2 previews and spent a few days in Montreal this week visiting Rogue Factor to check out Hell is Us (keep an eye out for our impending preview), so I’m still shield-bashing my way through hordes of demons. Although I still have a good way to go in Doom: The Dark Ages, I can confidently say, as of now, this medieval shake-up is one hell of a good time.

Developer Hanger 13 has revealed new videos showing gameplay and behind-the-scenes footage of Mafia: The Old Country. First revealed in 2022, the next entry and prequel in the Mafia series will be released on August 8. Mafia: The Old Country unfolds in early 1900s rural Sicily and centers on the origin of the Italian mafia. The story stars Enzo Favara, a former child laborer who grew up working in sulfur mines.

Led by Fragile, the organization’s goal is more or less the same as Bridges’ in the first game: reconnect entire nations to the Chiral Network to prevent human extinction.
