The surveillance, diagnosis and management of early to intermediate hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Australia is largely consistent with guidelines although decision-making is becoming more complex given the heterogeneity of disease and a rapidly evolving space. A case-based survey of 79 specialists, representing the typical make-up of a multidisciplinary HCC team, was conducted in meetings across six states.

Melanoma is twice as common in long-term survivors of childhood cancer with a commensurate increased risk of mortality compared to the general population. A North American study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology [link here], assessed incidence, risk factors, and outcomes for melanoma among 25,716 participants in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study cohort. Participants were initially diagnosed with either solid or haematological cancers between 1970 and 1999.

Blood group B may be associated with a reduced risk of rebleeding and the need for radiological intervention in patients with upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage due to peptic ulcer disease. The findings from a Melbourne study, published in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics [link here], adds to the evidence for an as yet unexplained link between blood groups and the risk of bleeding.

The role of prophylactic compression sleeves and exercise for the prevention of breast cancer-related arm lymphoedema (BCRAL) continues to be debated following the release of Multinational Association in Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) clinical practice guidance earlier this year. The guidance, published in eClinicalMedicine [link here] in February, recommended daily use of compression sleeves for at least 8 hours but individualised for patient preference and comfort.

According to US data from 1,068 cancer survivors, over half (52.5%) of the participants reported experiencing some form of financial toxicity.
