Around the holidays, there’s nothing I love more than a cocktail party. Plus, it’s ready in under 30 minutes. Consisting of just cream cheese, hot smoked salmon, and green onions, it’s a simplified version of a classic dip in my cookbook, Fresh Midwest.

As a born and bred Minnesotan, I can tell you there is no Midwestern gathering without bars. From birthday parties to funeral lunches to potlucks, you can count on at least a few types of sweets to end the meal. Scotcheroos are a classic example of an easy but delicious Midwestern bar dessert. In fact, for my high school graduation party, we hosted a dessert buffet, and you can bet that scotcheroos were part of the lineup.

When I moved back home to Minneapolis in 2020, I knew that one of the things I would miss about living in the San Francisco Bay Area was the abundance of incredible Mexican food. You’re never more than a few minutes from a great taqueria, which is almost guaranteed to have a cold bar filled with an array of handmade salsas and pickled vegetables. Luckily, there are several wonderful Mexican restaurants in the Twin Cities, though they aren’t located quite as close to home.

What is it about the longer days and the warmer weather that just screams brunch? Maybe it's the brunch-y spring holidays like Mother's Day, or that you can eat outside (!) during the day without shivering. Sorry to all the classic ketchup-slicked meat loaves of yore. There's a new hot loaf in town. It's still a bread-bound, rich loaf of meat, but we're skipping the ketchup and onion and building flavor with Italian sausage as the base and grated garlic, Parmesan, and mozzarella as the flavoring agents. This loaf is allll about the interplay of crisp and tender. Cheese oozes out of every slice, and to take it OTT, we fry each slice in a skillet until crispy and browned.

Potatoes and aioli-a match made in heaven. You could stop right there and have yourself a real nice time. Orrrr, you could throw a bunch of fried herbs, capers, and cornichons into the mix and have an unforgettable one. Frying woody herbs tones down their bitterness and intensity, leaving behind pure herbaceous flavor, so you can use a lot of them without overwhelming your palate.
