1 Melasma Melasma is a chronic dermatological condition that presents itself as brown or gray–brown hyperpigmented patches typically on photo-exposed areas [1]. It affects approximately 5–6 million people in the United States alone, and 1% of the global population [2]. Melasma affects all races, however individuals of Hispanic, Latin American, Middle Eastern, Asia, and African origin (Fitzpatrick skin phototypes III–V) are more likely to be affected by melasma [3].
